Our Neighborhood Youth and Family Ministries is a holistic approach to youth development in our community. We need men and women with a heart for children and youth. You will interact with young people in daily, organized, and unplanned activities focused on becoming champions for community, green space, and environmental/food justice issues.

Senior Park Patrol programming occurs Mondays through Thursdays from 9:30-4:30 pm.

Senior Park Patrol Staff Responsibilities

  • Lead all aspects of a 6 week leadership development-greenspace program within a diverse, low-income neighborhood.
  • Commit to investing in genuine relationships with young people.
    Relational ministry is at the heart of all we do.
  • Review curriculum and develop a basic knowledge of greenspace issues in an urban environment.
  • With staff team, prepare lessons and supplies for daily activities include outdoor service work.
  • Lead high school students (ages 15-19) in afternoon activities including, but not limited to: garden construction, landscaping, community assessments, greenspace planning, and field trips.
  • Effectively demonstrate greenspace tasks, such as proper gardening techniques, building a compost bin, or pulling/discarding weeds.
  • Facilitate relationships with potential program partners such as Boston Police, local businesses, etc.
  • Assist in supervising 5 high school intern (ages 15-19) learning greenspace and leadership skills.
  • Help to peacefully resolve conflicts that arise between youth employees.
  • Encourage parents/guardians in their role as primary care givers.
  • Participate in outreach including flyer distribution, door knocking, and parent phone calls.
  • Track attendance and program outcomes.
  • Assist Youth Jobs Coordinator with morning workplace and life skills training as needed.
  • Be willing to explore your gifts and talents in a supportive environment.
  • Work closely with members of a diverse staff team.
  • Evaluate and improve the program on a weekly basis.

Additional Expectations

Working with The Boston Project is more than a summer job, it's about joining a dynamic neighborhood ministry team.
In addition to the above daytime responsibilities, we look for summer staff who can also:
  • Participate as support staff in 1-2 evening events per week (see below)
    Sundays - Teen Cafe (6+ staff needed)
    Mondays - Family Fun Night (3-4 staff needed)
    Thursdays - Youth Bible Study (1-2 staff needed)
  • Be able to attend our staff dinner on Wednesdays 5-6:30 pm and staff lunch on Fridays 12 noon-1:30 pm
  • Attend our overnight staff retreat from Wednesday, July 24 to Friday, July 26 (return 5 pm)
  • Help plan and lead our closing summer program on Thursday evening, August 15

Qualifications

  • Experience in working with high school students (ages 15-19) a plus.
  • Experience working with at-risk and high-risk children, youth, and families.
  • Strength in one or more of our core program areas (leadership development, greenspace, and food issues).
  • Able to teach in a group setting with 10+ youth
  • Skills to work in a culturally diverse and sometimes intense environment.
  • Have the physical ability to work outside (in the summer heat).
  • Availability to work 1-2 evenings per week.
  • At least 20 years of age.

Time Commitment

June 17 - August 20, 2013
Monday-Thursday schedule is 8:30 am - 5:00 pm with 30 minute lunch. (typical day)
Friday schedule is 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Plus evening activities you commit to attend as support staff.
