“Let the little children come to me.” - Jesus Christ

The physical area God has placed us in is a small section of one of Boston’s most diverse and densely populated neighborhoods. In our 10 street-community there are over 1,000 children under the age of 18. That is a lot of young people! We feel the call of Christ to support children and families through responding to the immediate needs they express when they come to our door while also addressing longer-term, systemic social issues.

Most of our programs were birthed as ideas from children and families in our neighborhood. When children came to our door in 1999 and asked for help with math homework, our Homework Center was born. That same year children who were playing in the vacant lots at the end of our street were injured on illegal trash dumped in the lot. Since that day we have joined with neighbors and community organizations in a 10-year process of cleaning and maintaining that lot while planning to build a children's playground on it.

In this last year many of our teenage neighbors have been expressing a desire to follow Jesus in their daily lives. Several ask to study the Bible with us, others come to prayer meetings on Friday nights, and others are asking hard questions like “My friend doesn’t believe in God, he makes me doubt, what should I do?” We have been responding to this need through the bi-monthly Sunday Lunch Club and are planning to jump into weekly Bible studies this summer!

Summer Programs

Summer in the city means long days and hot nights.

The summer also represents a great opportunity to deepen friendships and create life-impacting programs for our young people. In light of financial pressures families face along with parent's desire to keep their children nearby, The Boston Project has been hosting free summer programs for children and youth in our immediate neighborhood since 1998.
