Being Thankful for My Community Day
100+ leaf and garbage bags filled with leaves and debris
40+ volunteers that came out to help clean-up
Only 36 degrees on this windy December Saturday
The second “Being Thankful for My Community” Day was held in the late fall of 2005 and secured its place in our neighborhood as an annual event. The Boston Project Ministries partnered with the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation and several area businesses to make this day possible.
Dorcas Dunham, our local Community Parks Organizer, has been instrumental in bringing this community-oriented, youth-focused day to reality over the past two years. “It is vitally important we take the steps to start teaching our youth the basic principles of thanksgiving,” Dorcas said in sharing her vision for this on-going event. “That is, being thankful year round for whatever we have. We need to help our youth become positive and productive adults and it starts today with what they got.”
Building On Our Successes
In 2005, Being Thankful Day built on its 2004 successes as we again hosted dozens of neighborhood youth and adults who raked seniors’ yards, future park space, and cleaned litter and illegally dumped debris from New England Avenue. New this year was a special pre-lunch Being Thankful presentation featuring local youth sharing their talents in song and poetry around the theme of thanksgiving. The presentation concluded as everyone present was able to tell about something they were thankful for this season. And even as temperatures dipped near freezing, several volunteers stayed to enjoy lunch (generously provided by local businesses) and a touch football game.As we reflect on this year’s event and anticipate what God will do in 2006, the words of Psalm 92:1 come to mind—“It is good to give thanks to the Lord!”
