Evangelical Community Church/Indiana University

Joining us for their spring break, college-aged students from Evangelical Community Church in Bloomington, IN spent time serving and learning in a variety of settings here in Boston. They found themselves exploring themes of race, justice, mercy and hope. Some of the most moving experiences in the week came when they were able to see these issues lived out through the lives of the people that they met in Boston. Serving alongside long-term urban workers, these students became a part of the work that God is doing in Boston.

“God taught me and reminded me about how much good there is in this world and how much He works through people to serve those in need, especially in cities...”
- Will, Indiana University

It was a week full of service in big and small ways. They were certainly the hands and feet of Jesus to many people and organizations during their week. From painting and sorting food at Fair Foods to counting coins for a fundraiser at A Woman’s Concern, students worked behind the scenes as support for these on-going ministries. They also impacted Boston’s people directly through after-school help at Homework Center and Project 21 and with Starlight Ministries’ outreach to those who are homeless.

As the week drew to a close, it was evident that both the students and those they encountered during the week had been challenged and blessed. However, the learning did not end there. Many of the students felt encouraged in their own efforts at service back home.

“The Lord taught me on this trip to be humble, fear him, and do all things in love – for His glory. The city stretched me and I can see His hands molding and shaping my own heart and the hearts of others.”
- Paul, Indiana University
