Creating Economic Opportunity

One of the opportunities I have become enthusiastic about recently is the small ways we can create income for people. And a lot of it has to do with recycling! As The Boston Project has become involved in larger community development projects, we have been able to generate some creative resources. For instance, our work at re-beautifying the Codman Burying Ground and building the Elmhurst Street Children's Park has produced some scrap metal. Well, in the city, scrap metal recycling is a thriving livelihood. Local neighbors come and take the metal away for resale. Also in the Codman Burying Ground, we have had to cut down several large, diseased trees. We hired a friend from down the street to cut the trees and then gave him the opportunity to sell the firewood at his own profit. We are not producing millionaires here, but this is a small way that we believe God cares about the whole person.
