Gardening in January

Paul Raking
This January, we had an incredible burst of warm weather in Boston putting us in the 50-60 degree range for several days. I was ready to get out my summer shorts!

This brief respite from the cold and snow allowed me to get out and finally clean my flower and vegetable gardens (we have 3-4 beds around our home) and rake the leaves in our backyard. Due to the busyness of the fall, I neglected this essential garden care. The yard was looking quite ragged.

As I raked, I thought a lot about caring for myself as well. The work was so refreshing! I love gardening analogies and I clearly understand how tending to my yard in this way will produce a much more beautiful spring bloom.

The question arose; "How has God led me to tend to myself this year so that I - or my marriage - or my family - or this ministry might bloom?" There are two things God has specifically nudged me towards in 2008: (1) to focus on good management of the resources He has loaned to us, and (2) to work through a new prayer journal this year. As I progress, I hope to be able to share with you the beauty of these two goals as they bloom in our life.
