I was just talking with some of our staff the other day about family traditions. The ladies were commenting on how they enjoy watching our family and the Riddles as we establish traditions with our children. It is causing them to reflect on what traditions they want to cherish in their futures. Let me share two Malkemes’ traditions with you.
Tradition #1: The Boston Common Tree Lighting
For the second year, our family rode the subway downtown with our BP family to watch the giant tree lighting at Boston Common. It is a fun night of great performances, eggnog, balloon hats, running around, hot chocolate, laughter, and cold noses. At the very end, not only does the giant Christmas tree light up, but so do all of the smaller tree surrounding the Boston Common. It is truly beautiful, and sets your heart in motion to celebrate the entire Christmas season. We love it.
Tradition #2: Squirrels in Our House?
For the second year as well, squirrels seem to be making the inside of our home part of their winter tradition. Last year, throughout the Christmas season a squirrel ate through six of our kitchen ceiling tiles. On one occasion a squirrel almost fell on me while I was utilizing the toilet. Two Sundays ago, a new squirrel fell through a ceiling tile above the toilet again. After searching Paul thought it had left the house. But, it hadn’t. Much to my surprise, I saw the squirrel staring at me as I typed away on Paul’s laptop 3 days later. It had been living in one of our sofas! The photo elaborates Paul’s attempt to remove the squirrel from the premises.
