As many of you may know that I often sport a yellow-borderline fluorescent- rain jacket. I’ve been known to use it to stop traffic while we tow our ministry pick up truck up the street to the garage. But what I wanted to share were my thoughts on wearing my yellow jacket on my walk to work. As my co-workers at the Boston Project know, I have a heart for getting to know my neighbors and building relationships. So one of my stubborn ways to try to achieve that is to walk to work. I love stopping and greeting, Lucky, the dog down the street, and waving to kids waiting for the bus, or introducing myself to my next-door neighbor. On my way to work, I often ponder the cause of the reactions I get from some people as they pass by me in their cars on my walk. I wish I could capture the faces of surprise or maybe stares and the every so often good ‘ole honk. One of my theories is that the yellow jacket is such a shocker. But I have also wondered if it is not the White girl walking around a predominately Black neighborhood wearing a bright yellow jacket. I guess it doesn’t really matter, but it is just a vignette into the life of the girl wearing the yellow jacket.
