This past weekend, we had a youth group from the suburbs of Boston come join us for what we call a Service Day. I got to work with about 5 of the junior high youth and their leader. Our mission was to go door to door and pass out fliers for the Halloween Alternative event at my church. It was an overcast day with rain in the forecast, so I actually wasn’t too excited to be put on the flier team.. BUT it was awesome. I got to see one of the youth step up in leadership and be in charge of mapping out our plan for tackling our mission. During our fliering, we encouraged one of the boys to go give a flier to someone who looked around the same age as him. His first response was, I can’t do that. I am not good at that. He eventually did. He crossed out of his boundaries. We continued on with our day and then at the end of the day during debriefing, the young man shared with the whole group more than once about his victory…realizing that he could go up to someone and share and simply pass out a flier. It may seem like such a simple act, yet to the youth it was profound! I can do what I thought I couldn’t. That was a highlight for me.
