MLK day 08

Yesterday three of the kids from our neighborhood, Catrina and I joined 33 other youth and adults to watch the movie The Great Debaters. The movie is about four young African american people, their college, town, and families as they overcome fear and the low expectations that have been placed on their ethnicity. The movie had all of us laughing, crying and shouting victoriously as we went through with them. (Denzel was a terrific director, and actor...)

After the movie we came back to Dorchester to eat pizza, talk about the movie and Martin Luther King Jr.

I was challenged by the comment made by one young man, "MLK day is not a celebration, actually it is an observation because his dream has not yet been realized." I couldn't help but pause to think about that.

And here is what else I found interesting... When people used to tell Martin Luther King Jr. that they wanted to join the work he was doing he would say this to them: "Well great, let me have your name and contact information. And now, study the life of Jesus, every day." MLK was all about bringing the KOG into this world... just as so many other social activists were in the 20th Century! It is just blowing my mind.

So here are the two things I have determined to do in this coming year:
1. Study the life of Jesus, every day.
2. Look around me and see where the Kingdom of God is not advancing, and prayerfully seek it's advance.
